5 Things You Need to Know Before Applying ….
1. We are not the TV Show!
We are many things at My Interior Design School, but we are not a TV Show.
If you want to be a contestant on the new hit TV series, Interior Design Masters, you will need to contact the producers of the show directly.
They are called Darlow Smithson Productions and here are their contact details:
Darlow Smithson Productions Ltd
Shepherds Building Central, Charecroft Way, London W14 0EE
Call: 0207 482 7027 / Email: [email protected]
2. Have you got the skills?
If you’ve watched episodes of the BBC2 series already, you’ll have seen that the contestants produce scheme boards.
Scheme boards are to show a client your design ideas for a room. As the designer, you may want to include your choice of paint, flooring, lighting, furniture and accessories so the client can visualise how a room might look.
At My Interior Design School we have courses and workshops to show you how to create a professional-standard scheme board. Learning this skill will help you be the interior designer you’ve been dreaming about!
3. Do You Measure Up?
Before you apply, are you confident of measuring a room accurately?
As a designer, this is a basic requirement when you are sourcing new items for a room and planning new layouts.
Once you have mastered the skills of measuring and recording a room’s dimensions, you’ll need to draw up scaled floorplans. You don’t need to be good at maths to do this and our courses and workshops can teach you this essential skill in our easy-to-follow, step-by-step guides.
4. Are You Colour Confident?
Whether you’re a Kelly Hoppen fan and love neutrals or you’re inspired by Tricia Guild’s bold design schemes; being colour confident will be really important if you want to do well on the show.
The judges might ask you to design a room based on a theme. In this series, we’ve seen the contestants tackle a ‘chocolate’ inspired room and a colourful pad for a university student.
Whatever the design brief, your knowledge of colour and understanding how to put colours together and their impact on a room, is a key design skill.
If you’re keen to know more about colour, discover how to make a room feel different by colour alone and learn which colours to use in certain rooms, our courses and workshops can help. Enrol with us here at My Interior Design School and we’ll ensure you get the skills you need to be a great interior designer.
5. Stop, Look and Listen
If you are dreaming of being one of the contestants on Interior Design Masters, another skill you will need is the ability to listen.
To be able to stop, look and listen – to really understand how your client wants their new interior to work and feel, is key to getting a room scheme right. As the designer, you will work to a client’s brief and the more you listen to what they want and then interpret their needs in your design choices, the more successful you will be.
Your client might be a shop owner, hairdresser, hotel manager, property developer or home owner – but the same rule applies – listen to the brief, design accordingly and you will soon have lots of happy and contented clients.
We hope you are enjoying the show as much as we are. And you’re inspired to apply to be a contestant. Interior design is a fantastic business to be in and you can be that successful interior designer.
Follow these 5 pieces of advice and we’re sure you will have what it takes to be accepted and appear on our TV screens in the next series.
